Leonardo da Vinci studied the mechanics of flight by watching how birds, dragonflies, and bats could fly. In the mid 1490s Leonardo planned a test flight for a flying machine with articulated wings activated by man-powered foot pedals. The flying machine was constructed in a sheltered location on the roof of the Corte dell’ Arengo in Milan. There is no evidence that the planned test flight ever took place.
