Summary/Review: "Ernest D. “Doc” Banting (1892-1973) was a salesman, a politician … and a bit of a rogue. As a town councillor in the 1920s, Ernest became deeply involved in the civic life of the Town of Weston, Ontario. He led his Orange Lodge, the Conservative riding association and the Weston Amateur Athletic Association where he coached a championship lacrosse team. During the Depression, Ernest led the local CCF and founded the Weston Workingmen’s Club which channelled the frustration of the unemployed into community betterment. During and after World War 2, Ernest headed Weston’s Unemployment Insurance office and helped build a local arena which he would manage in his retirement. In the 1960s he successfully campaigned to bring alcohol to the “dry” Town of Weston. Vividly recreating a vanished era, this book is also author Richard Jordan’s personal quest to learn about the paternal grandfather he never knew, Ernest D. Banting"--amazon.ca.
